THE VERDICT – TOTTEN’S THE MAN!

ITTA BENA, MS – The verdict is officially in and Willie Horace
Totten is the new man at “The Valley.”

Athletics Director Lonza Hardy Jr. has tabbed Totten as the new
head football coach of the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.
Totten becomes the 14th head coach in the school’s 48 years on the
gridiron. His appointment is contingent upon approval by the Board of
Trustees for the Mississippi State Institutions of Higher Learning.

Totten is no stranger to the MVSU football program, having set
over 50 NCAA passing records as an All-American quarterback for the
Delta Devils during the 1980’s. For the past two seasons, Totten, 39,
served as offensive coordinator for the Delta Devils, re-joining the
MVSU coaching staff after serving two seasons as the head football
coach and athletics director at Eastside High School in Cleveland, MS.

Before going to the high school ranks, the four-time All-SWAC
selection was an assistant football coach at MVSU under Larry Dorsey.
Totten worked as the school’s head men’s and women’s tennis coach from
1996-98. From 1988-89, he worked as a graduate assistant under
Grambling State University’s legendary Eddie Robinson. Totten received
his Master of Science degree in Sports Administration from GSU in 1989.

The record-setting Totten helped MVSU to a 28-11-1 record as
the captain of “The Satellite Express” offense. Future National
Football League Hall of Famer Jerry Rice was Totten’s top receiver
under then Delta Devil head coach Archie “Gunslinger” Cooley’s pass-
happy offense. Rice and Totten’s pass-catch combination set 75 NCAA
records, including Totten’s amazing feat of nine passing touchdowns in
one game. For their collegiate exploits, the former Magnolia Stadium -
home of the Delta Devils - was renamed Rice-Totten Stadium in the
spring of 1999.

What Others Are Saying About Willie Totten

“Mississippi Valley State University is fortunate to have a man of such
high morals and character as Willie Totten taking over the reigns as
our new head football coach. Immediately, the stature of our football
program has been elevated and the bar of expectations has been raised.
Willie’s hard-work ethic, dynamic personality and outstanding people
skills will surely make him the next great head football coach in the
state, the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the nation. I’m happy
today and all of our alumni, friends and supporters must surely be
happy too.”
— Lonza Hardy Jr., Mississippi Valley State University Director of Athletics

“Willie shares my philosophy of hard work and discipline, the two keys
to any successful sports program. He possesses a positive attitude and
a genuine concern for the overall welfare of student-athletes both on
and off the field. I could never emphasize enough what a tremendous
asset he’ll be to the Mississippi Valley athletic program. I’m
confident he’ll turn the Delta Devils into a premier program in the
Southwestern Athletic Conference.”
— Marino H. Casem, Director of Athletics, Alcorn State University

“I have known Willie for several years as a player and coach. As head
coach at Morehouse College, I tried to hire him as the offensive
coordinator. Since that time, I have watched Willie grow as a coach and
have followed his career closely. I know he’ll bring instant
credibility and success to the Mississippi Valley State University
football program.”
— Doug Williams, Head Football Coach, Grambling State University

“Coach Totten was on staff for two years, 1998-2000, at Eastside High
School with many different teaching and coaching assignments. As
principal, I appointed Willie to the position of athletics director and
head football coach. During his tenure, I found that Willie is
definitely a good character model for young adults to work with,
whether in high school or college. He literally rebuilt the football
program at Eastside and I guarantee he’ll do the same for Mississippi
Valley.”
— George Jordan, Principal, McComb High School

“I have known Willie for over 20 years. I was fortunate enough to have
played and attended college with him. As teammates I was able to see
first hand his athletic abilities. He was a team player and was able to
channel his energy positively on and off the field. I am sure
Mississippi Valley’s football team, athletics department, fans, and
alumni will be more than satisfied with his performance as head coach
of our alma mater.”

QUOTING COACH THOMAS

On the victory against Alabama State...
"I can not really put into words on what the win did for us. I am happy
more so for my ball players, coaching staff and the university."
"It shows to a lot of people (the fans, media and opponents) that we are
capable of winning games and is able to play the type of football that we
are capable of playing."

On Donald Carrie being named SWAC Newcomer-of-the-Week....
"I am not at all surprised about Donald Carrie being named SWAC
Newcomer-of-the-Week. I have said all along that he is perhaps the best
quarterback in our conference overall in terms of tenacity, toughness,
throwing the football and escapability."
"He brings the total package, he can not be undaunted. In fact, when think
that you have undaunted him, you have made him mad and that is when he can
really hurt you. We are trying to get him to play at a senior level and I
think that he can do that. He has both the capability and the mental
toughness to do that."

About the offense as a whole....
"I think Coach (John) McKenzie (offensive coordinator), (Richard) Myles
(running backs), Yancy Wright (graduate assistant) and (Clyde) Jefferson
(offensive line) did an outstanding job in preparing the team strategically
against the Alabama State defense - they called an outstanding game."
"The guys executed very well and we did not have any interceptions or
fumbles that we lost and we had only two penalties - that is how you win
football games. I am very happy and proud of our offense and offensive
staff for doing a very outstanding job."

About the defense....
"The defense did an outstanding job considering that we did not have the
films on some of their (Alabama State) personnel to get any tendencies on
them. I think that what made the defense' performance so special and
rewarding is that they had to make adjustments on the field throughout the
course of the game."
"The players were mature enough to make the adjustment from the sidelines
and then go out and execute them on the field - as a result of that, they
went out and won the football game."
"Just being able to go out there to perform in that type of situation was
truly admirable. We did not know anything about their quarterback (B.J.
Tiger) and we were preparing for (Darnell) Kennedy in which he did not
play."
"They (Alabama State) had a quarterback who was just that much more mobile
and can throw the football along with being able to run the option. For our
defense to be able to adjust on their feet so to speak - it was just an
outstanding performance."

On the interceptions by Omega Logan to set up the first score and by Eric
Bradford to seal the victory....
"That is what I have been trying to tell people since I have been here. You
win championships with defense and special teams. I was so happy that he
(Logan) picked that ball off which led to a score because it indicates what
type of hands that he has."
"We needed defense to seal the game for us by executing the game winning
interception - that is what defense is supposed to do."

On the games being cancelled this past weekend......
"Anytime you have a tragedy of that kind in America in which innocent people
lose their lives, I think that everybody should take a serious look at what
they are doing to reflect their solace toward the family members of the
individuals who were killed."
"You always want to look at this as if one your family members were killed,
or this happening in your community - how would one feel if people did not
acknowledge the fact that they are grieving and sad just like the families
of the victims."
"But in terms of the game being cancelled, I am looking at it in two
separate parts. I think it hurt us because we had a great deal of momentum
going into last week's game after coming off of a win. I think that we had
an outstanding game plan for special teams, offense and defense. We had a
good practice and the players were really ready to compete against UAPB and
now we have got to redirect our energies in preparing for McNeese State."

On playing against McNeese State.....
"McNeese State has an outstanding football team as usual. It is going to be
a pivotal game for us, I think that we can beat McNeese State if we do not
get many penalties or turn the ball over."
"They have an outstanding offensive, defensive and special teams unit. It
is going to be a hard-fought game and McNeese State might not know that we
are coming down there to play some football. We are not coming down there
with any other mind set other than to win the football game."

MVSU GEARING UP FOR FANS' DAY

ITTA BENA, MS – The Mississippi Valley State University football team
will hold its dress rehearsal football scrimmage on Saturday, August 25, at
4:30 p.m. in Rice- Totten Stadium in preparation for the September 1st
season-opening bout with the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions.

The scrimmage will be held in conjunction with the team's annual Fans'
Day.

Head football coach LaTraia Jones is urging Delta Devils' fans and alumni
to come out to the scrimmage and pep rally that will include cheerleaders and
dancers.

"We want fans to come out and get a look at us and enjoy themselves,"
Jones said. "The fans will get a chance to meet some of the familiar and new
faces and hopefully their support will carry over with us when we go to face
Pine Bluff."

Despite being picked to finish in the lower half of conference play by
most pre- season polls, the Delta Devils with Jones at the helm feel they'll
be the Southwestern Athletic Conference's surprise team in 2001.

Jones said his team had the best two-a-day camp ever held during his
three years on the job, while stating that the size and speed of the team
overall and the aggressiveness of the defense will spell more wins for MVSU.

"I'm really impressed with where our team is at this point of the
pre-season," Jones said. "Defensively, we're ready to play a football game.
If we can get our offensive line going, our running backs Brandon Dawson and
Samuel McPherson will be able to make some things happen for us. Overall I
feel good about where this team is as a whole and I've been especially
pleased with our defensive effort"

Jones and his staff will work on special teams and game situations for
both the offense and defense during the mock game and the players will be
available for autographs and media interviews afterwards.

ALCORN STATE'S SECONDARY IS HIT WITH MINOR INJURIES

Alcorn State, Miss. - The Alcorn State secondary has been hit with some
minor injuries throughout the course of training camp. Both returning
starters in cornerbacks Terrence Crimiel (6-1,170,Sr.) and Willie Blair
(6-1,179,Jr.) along with backup Tyrone Parsons (5-9,160,So.) have all missed
some time in camp with some minor injuries during training camp.
Fortunately for head coach Johnny Thomas, all three are expected to return
for the season opener against Grambling State on September 1.
"The secondary is coming along pretty good, we are banged up a little bit
at our corner position - but not to the extent that they won't be back for
the game," Thomas said. "We have (Terrence) Crimiel out with tendinitis and
Willie Blair with an ingrown toenail and (Tyrone) Parsons out with a
hairline fracture to the clavicle, but all of whom will be back. The rest
of the secondary people are healthy and they are doing an outstanding job."
In spite of the injuries, a lot is expected from Crimiel, Blair and strong
safety Chris Lee (5-9,170,So.) in which they will be counted on to provide
some leadership to a very talented secondary.
Safeties Tim Batts (6-1,185,So.), Henry Jackson (6-4,190,Sr.)and Jeremy
Stockdale (5-8,185 Fr.) will all be vying to fill in for departed two-year
starter Ken Washington who was ranked second on the team in total tackles
with 73 last year at the free safety spot. Cornerback Brandon Coleman
(5-10,170,Fr.) will be expected to contribute at the cornerback position.
Alcorn State will host its annual media day activities on Saturday, August
25th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will be a cookout hosted by the A-Club at
the park on Alcorn State's campus.

Texas Southern Tigers Complete Final Scrimmage

Houston-TX-The TSU football team ran 20 plays during its last scrimmage in
preparation for its game against Prairie View, Saturday, September 1.
The Tiger's defense dominated the first half of the scrimmage, allowing one
touchdown.
"I was pleased with the effort," Defensive Coordinator Coach Jake
Cabell said. "Since the spring and even in camp, the defensive first team
hasn't given up more than seven points".
The Tiger's offense got revenge during the second half, scoring two
touchdowns and three field goals.
"The offense is looking good," Passing Game Coordinator Coach
Jarrett Harper said. "We are a little banged up from camp, but we will be
more than ready to go for the first game."
Head Coach Bill Thomas was satisfied with the team's overall
performance in the scrimmage.
"We have a few minor changes that we have to deal with," said
Thomas. "I think the players are doing a fine job."
The team returns to regular two-a-day practices Thursday, 9-11 a.m.
and 4-6 p.m.

ALCORN STATE'S RECEIVERS WORK ON CONSISTENCY

Alcorn State, Miss. - The Alcorn State wide receiver corps will be both
very big and talented in personnel. Even though this group will have a lot
returning, consistency is a very huge concern with head coach Johnny Thomas
throughout the course of training camp.
"We have a core group of receivers who have a lot of experience and are of
pretty good size. We have got to get more consistent in catching the ball
as a wide receiver corps," Thomas said. "They are going to have to make
some plays for us and we are going to depend on them because we have a young
quarterback."
Senior Marco Walder (6-6,230) and junior Ronald Gilmore (6-4,195) along
with speedster Clifford Perry (6-2,175,Jr.) are expected to pose a serious
threat to opponents during the season.
Junior George Jones (6-5,195) along with newcomers Coutney Young
(5-10,154,Fr.) and Chris Gale (6-0,175,So.) should all provide some depth
for this group in 2001.
"We are not where we want to be at for our wide receiver group because we
are not consistently catching the ball, but I think that we can improve on
that and get better," Thomas added. "Overall, we are a pretty good wide
receiver corps and I think that the only thing lacking is consistency in
catching the ball."
The team worked on goal line and skeleton passing drills along with some
one-on-one and seven-on-seven drills. Thomas feels that everyone has been
giving a good effort although there is some room for improvement.
"Practice is coming along pretty good, but not as good as I want it to be.
The guys are working hard, going all out and executing and doing the very
best that they can do in the heat. It is going by as well as you can expect
at this particular point."
Alcorn State will host its annual media day activities on Saturday, August
25th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will be a cookout hosted by the A-Club at
the park on Alcorn State's campus.

THOMAS IS NOT PLEASED WITH PROGRESS OF THE OFFENSIVE LINE

Alcorn State, Miss. - The Alcorn State offensive line is not progressing to
the expectations of the coaching staff throughout the course of training
camp. Although all five starters return from last year's group along with
some battle tested veterans, the group has not been going into the direction
that it needs to be at this stage. The offensive line has been hit with a
number of injuries in which a lot of people have not been able to practice.
"I am not at all satisfied with the play of the offensive line. We have
too many people that are out in which I thought we had depth at this
position," head coach Johnny Thomas said. "At this particular point, we got
people out with high blood pressure or some type of injury that started from
last year. It might change, but I am not pleased with the play of the
offensive line."
The five starters who return from last year are tackles Jason Lewis
(6-1,298,So.) and Terence Johnson (6-3,270,Jr.); guards Ledarien Strauss
(6-1,322,So.) and William Smith (6-2,280,So.) along with center Zephaniah
Smalley (6-0,260,So.) will be vital to the success of the offense during the
upcoming season. Seniors Corey Sutton (6-1,297) and Lamar Tate (6-0,290)
will both be called upon to provide some leadership to this group. Sutton
will not be able return until mid-season once he becomes healthy after
sustaining a knee injury during the spring drills.
The team worked out in seven-on-seven drills in both the running and
passing game and then went into eleven-on-eleven drills. Towards the end of
practice, the team then broke up into offensive and defensive group work.
Alcorn State will host its annual media day activities on Saturday, August
25th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will be a cookout hosted by the A-Club at
the park on Alcorn State's campus.

ALCORN STATE'S DEFENSIVE LINE IS TURNING IT UP IN CAMP

Alcorn State, Miss. - The Alcorn State defensive line is having a
tremendous showing throughout the course of training camp. This area of the
team will have a very familiar look in which they will return three of four
starters along with several battle tested veteran reserves. This is truly
one of the strongest areas on the team according to head coach Johnny
Thomas.
"The defensive line is perhaps the biggest strength that we have on the
team. We have a tremendous amount of depth and all of the guys have played
a lot - most of them have played since they were freshmen," Thomas said.
"We have some outstanding defensive linemen returning. If we are going to
win, we are going to have to win it in the trenches with our defensive
line."
Coach Thomas has a legitimate claim about this group with returning
starters in defensive ends Marcus Evans (6-6,265,Sr.) and Edwin Norwood
(6-4,253,Jr.) along with tackle Bryan Williams (6-6,315,Jr.).
In addition to this group having three starters returning, there is a great
deal of depth at this position. Reserves in ends Merrian Buford
(6-0,253,Sr.), Eric Bradford (6-3,232,Jr.), Ross Gordon (6-3,240,So.) and
Tommy Thedford (6-1,244,Jr.) along with tackles Sanrick Shannon
(6-0,275,So.) and Eric Roach (6-4,280,So.) should all see plenty of action
in the fall.
The Alcorn State football team ended their two-a-day workouts on Saturday
afternoon and began classes this morning. The team's practice time was
pushed back to 7:15 p.m. due to the Athletes as Scholars meeting which took
place from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Alcorn State will
host its annual media day activities on Saturday, August 25th from 3:00 to
5:00 p.m. There will be a cookout hosted by the A-Club at the park on
Alcorn State's campus.
MVSU FOOTBALL CAMP CONCLUDES

ITTA BENA, MS - Saturday afternoon signaled the end of Mississippi
Valley State University head coach LaTraia Jones' second annual Lineman
Camp and Passing Tournament.

Six local and area teams participated in the two-day camp that
featured specialized instruction for high school offensive and defensive
linemen, with a passing tournament for skill position players. During
the awards ceremony, individuals received offensive, defensive and
lineman outstanding performance awards and championship and runner-up
trophies were presented to the teams participating in the tournament
title game.

"I was really pleased with this year's camp and the performance
of the participants, Jones said after the awards ceremony. "Everybody
got a chance to come out and compete and that's what it's all about here
at MVSU.

Because of the weather, we did not get the turnout we expected,
but the weather held up and we were able to put on a pleasant camp,"
Jones said. "I'm excited about the fact that we are doing some positive
things with this camp and next year with some improvements it'll be even
more exciting."

MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE RELIEVES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL AND
SOFTBALL COACHES

ITTA BENA, MS -- Mississippi Valley State University's head women's
basketball and volleyball coach Jessie Harris, along with assistant
basketball and head softball coach Bernita Alexander, have been relieved
of their coaching and administrative duties, effective June 30.

The University will immediately begin a national search to fill all
three positions.

New MVSU Director of Athletics Lonza Hardy, Jr. cited a need for
a new direction in the programs as the major reason for making the
coaching changes.

Although he has not contacted any potential candidates, Hardy
said he hopes to bring in someone as soon as possible to finish the
recruiting season, hire a coaching staff and get the programs up and
running.

"MVSU is grateful for the many years of diligent service which
it has received from both Jessie and Bernita. They have both worked
hard to positively affect the lives of the student-athletes they've
coached during their time here. We appreciate them and we wish them
nothing but the best in their future." Hardy said.

ALABAMA STATE MEN AND ALCORN WOMEN GRAB
TOP SEEDS IN SWAC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

BIRMINGHAM -- The Alabama State University Hornets, picked second in the
Southwestern Athletic Conference men's basketball coaches' preseason poll,
defied the oddsmakers by capturing the league championship and garnering the
top seed in this week's tournament.
Meanwhile, the Alcorn State University Lady Braves did just what the
coaches had predicted all along. They captured the SWAC women's championship
and will enter the tournament as the number one seed.
The SWAC Basketball Tournament, presented by Cingular Wireless, tips off
on Tuesday, March 6 on the campuses of the four highest seeded teams.
In the men's field, top-seeded Alabama State will play host to No.8 seed
Prairie View A&M at 1 p.m. at the Joe L. Reed Acadome in Montgomery, Ala.

In the women's bracket, preseason favorite and defending tournament
champion Alcorn State lingered in the shadows of Alabama State for much of
the season before a late-season surge, coupled with a late-season plunge by
Alabama State, resulted in the Lady Braves' 10th regular-season SWAC
championship, more than any other school. ASU, 18-10 overall and 15-3 in the
SWAC, will host No.8 seed Arkansas-Pine Bluff, who's making its SWAC tourney
debut with records of 5-22 overall and 5-13 in the conference. Tipoff is
slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
The top portion of the women's bracket will also feature No.4 seed
Alabama State and No.5 seed Texas Southern, who'll square off at 11 a.m. at
the Joe L. Reed Acadome on ASU's campus. The ASU Lady Hornets completed the
regular-season with records of 18-9 overall and 12-6 against league opponents
while TSU finished at 15-12 overall and 10-8 in the conference.
The lower portion of the women's bracket includes a match-up between No.2
seed Southern and No.7 seed Jackson State at 5:30 at the Felton G. Clark
Activity Center on Southern's campus in Baton Rouge. SU enters the tourney
with records of 18-9 overall and 13-5 in the SWAC while JSU enters the
tourney with marks of 8-17 overall and 6-12 in the league.
At 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium in Grambling, La., perennial power
Grambling State, seeded No.3, will host No. 6 seed Prairie View A&M. The GSU
Lady Tigers are 16-11 overall and 12-6 in SWAC play while the PVAMU
Pantherettes will enter the tournament with records of 13-14 overall and 10-8
in the conference.
The winners of Tuesday's men's and women's quarterfinals will advance to
the semifinals on Friday, March 9 at Fair Park Arena in Birmingham. The
women's semifinals are slated for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. with the men's

HYMES JOINS JACKSON ON SWAC HONOR ROLL

BIRMINGHAM -- For the third time in four weeks, standout guard Shameka

rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.5 steals and 1.5 blocked shots as the ASU Lady

shots. That was followed by 26 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one

Bluff on Saturday, Hymes, a 6-3 native of Hitchcock, Tex., garnered 13

BRAVES GO INTO THIS WEEKEND AS "THE WALKING WOUNDED"

ALCORN STATE, Miss. – Several members of the Braves basketball team has
been recently afflicted with both the flu and injuries going into this
weekend games against Alabama A&M and Alabama State. Senior forward Marcus
Fleming (6-8, 215) and sophomore guard Jeff Cammon (6-0, 175) both are
questionable for the team's trip to Alabama this weekend with the flu while
sophomore guard J.T. West (5-10, 165) will not make the trip because of the
flu. Both Fleming and West did not participate in Wednesday's workout.
West did play in the game against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday while
being inactive with a severely injured ankle since November 25th.
"It has hampered our preparation for this road trip tremendously. This is
a vital road trip for us because they are in second (Alabama State) and
third place (Alabama A&M), so it is a vital road trip for us," head coach
Davey L. Whitney said. "To go in there undermanned, we are just going to
have to play exceptionally well and then we are going to be limited in who
can play and how much – that is a big problem."
Sophomore center Walter Harper (6-8, 225) and sophomore forward Tori Harris
also have the flu. Harper is in the recovery stage while Harris sat out of
Tuesday's practice. Both players played with the flu on Monday night's game
against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Both players worked out during Wednesday's
practice.
The Braves have not had a full contingent of athletes for quite some time
according to coach Whitney. "We have not had a full squad for the last
three weeks. I think the kids have showed a lot of courage to play. I
thought Harper did a tremendous job knowing that he was under the weather."
On the injured list for Alcorn State is junior guard Travis Norris (6-2,
190) and Cammon who both have sore knees. Norris did not participate in
Saturday's game against the Delta Devils. Junior center Larry Robinson
(6-8, 215) has been hobbled with a sore foot but has not missed any action.
Sophomore forward Brian Jackson (6-6, 205) has been out for three games with
a sore shoulder but returned to action for Monday's game.
The Braves currently 6-9 overall with a 6-0 mark for first place in the
Southwestern Athletic Conference while Alabama A&M is 5-8 overall and 3-2 in
conference play. Alabama State has a record of 8-6 overall along with a 4-1
mark in league play.
Alcorn State will go to Normal to play against Alabama A&M on Saturday
while heading to Montgomery to face Alabama State on Monday.

WILLIAMS AND TAYLOR SET FOR HONORS
By Scott Boatright
Grambling State Sports Information Director

GRAMBLING -- As he busily continues to scour the nation for football
recruits, Grambling State coach Doug Williams is taking a short break to reap
the benefits of a championship season.

The coach of the Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Tigers will be
honored Saturday after being named SWAC Coach of the Year by the Pigskin
Club, Inc. of Washington, D.C. Williams will be accompanied by Grambling
junior linebacker Robert Taylor, who was named the Pigskin Club's SWAC Player
of the Year.

Williams and Taylor will be honored at a banquet held at the Capitol
Hilton Hotel at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Washington D.C.

Grambling went 10-2 this season, defeating Alabama A&M in the second
annual SWAC championship game in Birmingham, Ala. After helping the Tigers
earn the NCAA's Division I National Black College Championship, Williams said
he's still trying to take in the success he guided the Tigers to this season.

"It was a great season and I'm looking forward to the banquet," Williams
said. "Anytime you get recognized for your accomplishments you're proud, but
getting to go back to (Washington) D.C. makes it a little sweeter."

Williams is still a hero in Washington D.C. after being named MVP of
Super Bowl XXII in 1988 as he led the Washington Redskins to a 42-10 win over
the Denver Broncos.

Taylor, an All-SWAC selection at 6-4 and 255 pounds, led the Tigers with

the 2000 fall semester, with 11 of those athletes being named to the
President's List and five athletes recording perfect 4.0 grade point averages.
"I just think it's a carry over from the 53 athletes we had graduate in
the fall," GSU Director of Athletics Albert Dennis said. "I think it's a
testament to the hard work put in by (Academic Enhancement coordinator) Peggy
Ethridge, the coaches, the athletic staff and the students themselves. It
continues to show the importance of the educational process and the emphasis
we encourage our students to put into their studies."

success in their studies. I'd like to extend my congratulations to all of
those student athletes for their demonstration of academic excellence."
Ethridge said all the hard work is worth it in the end.
"It's tiring trying to stay on top of all our students and their
academic process, just because you have so many different athletes on so many
different teams," Ethridge said. "But the fact they work so hard at it makes
it easier for us to work hard to help them. When you see a student

BIRMINGHAM - A slate of four games will comprise the inaugural
Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season television package, according
to league officials.
League commissioner Rudy Washington said this year's four-game
regular-season slate is the first-ever for the 10-member conference, which in
past years has only seen telecasts of some of its post-tournament games.
"We're very pleased to initiate this project this year and it'll offer
outstanding regional and national exposure for basketball in our conference,"
said Washington. "But this is just a beginning. We expect our future
basketball television packages to include more regular-season games and to
include an expanded coverage area."
The four televised games will appear live on stations which are a part of
the NASCAR Images Syndicated Network, the Major Broadcast Network (MBC) as
well as the American Independent Network (AIN) in addition to some live and
some delayed telecasts on the Comcast Cable Network. All of the games will
be produced by NASCAR Images, Inc..
The 2001 SWAC Basketball Television Package initiates on Monday, January
8 with a rematch of the two teams which played in last season's SWAC
tournament championship game G€” Jackson State University and Southern
University. That game will be televised from the campus of Jackson State in
Jackson, Miss. at 7:30 p.m.
Game two of the package will include a 7:30 p.m. clash on Saturday,
January 20 between perennial SWAC power Texas Southern University and
relative newcomer the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. That game will
be played on UAPB's campus in Pine Bluff, Ark.
Two days later, on Monday, January 22, game three of the package will
include a televised battle between defending SWAC champion Alcorn State
University and Alabama State University on the latter school's campus in
Montgomery, Ala. That game has an 8 p.m. tipoff.
The final regular-season game to be televised will be a February 5
contest between Mississippi Valley State University and Alabama State in
Montgomery. That game also has an 8 p.m. starting time.
Washington said that in addition to the four televised regular-season
SWAC games, the semifinals of the SWAC men's basketball tournament as well as

SHREVEPORT TO HOST SWAC SPRING SPORTS FESTIVAL

BIRMINGHAM - The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced today that
it's annual Spring Sports Festival will be staged at various venues in
Shreveport, La. in both 2001 and 2002.
According to Commissioner Rudy Washington, the SWAC Spring Sports
Festival will determine the conference's champions in six sports, including
men's and women's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track and field, baseball
and softball. The league's only spring sports championships not to be
contested in Shreveport are men's and women's golf, which will be contested
in Pine Bluff, Ark. for the next two years.
"We're very happy with the level of interest shown by the city of
Shreveport and the Shreveport Regional Sports Authority in hosting our Spring
Sports Festival," stated Washington. "Not only will their involvement help
to boost interest in our spring sports, but holding our spring sports
championships in Shreveport should help to increase the level of interest in
college sports in that area as well as contribute to the local economy."
The 2001 SWAC Spring Sports Festival kicks off on April 27-29 with the
men's and women's tennis championships. The women's championship will be
held at the Southern Hills Tennis Center while the men's championship will be
held at the Cockrell Tennis Center.
The remainder of the festival will be held on May 3-6 and will include
the baseball tournament at Fair Grounds Field, the softball tournament at the
Cargill Softball Complex and the men's and women's outdoor track and field
championships at the Caddo Parish Stadium Track.
"Since the Sports Authority is an economic development corporation and
the SWAC Spring Sports Festival brings a significant number of
student-athletes, our hosting is a perfect partnership -- a significant
economic impact for our city," said Mary Ann Tice, executive director and
chief administrative officer of the organization. "As important, however,
we're proud to enter this relationship with the SWAC because of our existing
relationships with a number of SWAC schools. Additionally, geographically,
Shreveport provides a center meeting ground for a majority of the
conference's member institutions. This announcement is indeed very exciting.
For us, this is the beginning of a long-term relationship with the
conference."
Tice said the Sports Authority and the city of Shreveport have been
working for several months on trying to entice the SWAC to bring its spring
sports championships to the north Louisiana city. A plus for the conference,
she said, are the venues where the competitions will be held.
"Our city is fortunate to have first-class facilities owned and
maintained by the city of Shreveport," noted Tice. "I think our facilities
far exceed those of many other cities' facilities and quite a few college
facilities as well.  Furthermore, movement between venues is not difficult;
going from the furthest points at one venue to the next venue shouldn't take
more than 20 minutes."
Ticket prices for the festival events are expected to be determined in a
matter of weeks.

MAGIC CITY' TO HOST SWAC BASKETBALL TOURNEY

BIRMINGHAM -- The city of Birmingham took another giant leap towards
becoming "the Magic City" for the Southwestern Athletic Conference when it
was announced on Monday that the semifinals and finals of the league's annual
post-season basketball tournament would be played here next March.
For the past two years, Birmingham has played host to the HealthSouth
SWAC Football Championship and on February 1, 2000, the 10-member conference
completed its move from New Orleans, La. to its new headquarters at the A.G.
Gaston Building in the historic Civil Rights District.
"We're thrilled to bring another major SWAC event to this city," said
SWAC commissioner Rudy Washington. "We've been highly impressed with the
level of interest in our conference from city officials, SWAC alumni and fans
alike. The local community here has supported us and we want to reciprocate
by being a major play maker in the college sports entertainment business.
This is just the beginning of a mutually beneficial marriage."
The first round games of the SWAC men's and women's tournaments will be
played on the campuses of the four highest seeded teams on Tuesday, March 6.
The winners will advance to the semifinals at Fair Park Arena on the Alabama
State Fairgrounds on Friday, March 9. The men's championship is scheduled
for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 with the women's championship to tip off 30
minutes after completion of the men's title game.
Tickets to the Birmingham games of the SWAC tournament will be $20 for a
weekend pass for all games, $10 for individual sessions and $5 for children
and students with proper identification.
While the final details of the agreement to bring the tournament to
Birmingham are still being finalized, Washington said he expects to sign a
two-year deal with the city with options for two additional years.
