Albany State, Fort Valley to battle in 11th Fountain City Classic
Two of the biggest rivals in black college football history, the Albany
State University Golden Rams and the Fort Valley State University Wildcats,
will go to war in the 11th Annual Fountain City Classic (FCC) on Saturday,
Nov. 11. Set to kickoff at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ga.,
the FCC is touted as one of the biggest and best black college football
classics.	The Golden Rams enter the game with a 3-6 record, after losing a
heartbreaker to Morehouse College, 13-12. The Wildcats currently hold a 7-3
overall record.
This year's game is the 54th meeting of the ASU Golden Rams and the FVSU
Wildcats since 1945, and the 11th meeting of the two teams in the FCC. FVSU
leads the series 30-20-3 and ASU leads the FCC series 7-3. The first
meeting of the two schools was in 1945, when the FVSU Wildcats beat the ASU
Golden Rams 27-21. The two schools did not play each other in 1946 and
1947. Last year, the Golden Rams defeated the Wildcats 24-21 in the FCC
game.
While the rivalry between the two teams spans more than half a century,
FCC officials moved the game to Columbus in 1990, a regional center, to
make it a weekend event full of classic activities, said State Rep. Calvin
Smyre, chairman of the FCC, Inc.
"It makes great business sense to bring this gathering and game to
Columbus," Smyre said. "There are a lot of alumni located in and around
Columbus and they are loyal football fans."
Ted Pooler, of the FCC Local Host Committee, said, "With proceeds going to
the schools, more funds can be generated from a larger crowd in attendance
at a larger facility. It's a win-win situation for the city of Columbus and
the schools. Hotels are full and people are having a great weekend."
The FCC activities kickoff with a news conference and media luncheon on
Nov. 8 and ends with an after-game party on Nov. 11. A schedule of
activities is listed below.
Tickets for the FCC are $20 for limited reserve seats; $15 in advance and
$18 at the game for adults; $8 in advance and $10 at the gate for children
and other college students; and $6 in advance and $10 at the gate for ASU
and FVSU students with valid identification. Tickets are on sale on campus
at the ASU Business Office and Post Office, Odyssey Records, Connie's
Corner, R&S Sports, Owens Sporting Goods, June Bug's Grocery Store, Jaxx
Beer and Wine Dougherty County Credit Union and National Package Store.
For ticket information, call the ASU Department of Athletics at
912-430-4673, FVSU Department of Athletics at 912-825-6543 or 706-322-2570,

Albany State Basketball Teams to have Blue & Gold game

Albany State University's (ASU) hoop stars will shine on Tuesday, Nov. 14,
as the ASU Lady Rams and Golden Rams basketball teams tip-off their
2000-2001 seasons with the Blue and Gold game. The festivities will start
at 6 p.m. with music, entertainment and prizes in the HPER Gymnasium. The
scrimmage game will start at 7 p.m.
ASU Director of Athletics Dan Land said the Blue and Gold game was planned
because of fans' interest in a scrimmage game.
"We did not have a Midnight Madness game this year because of schedule
conflicts. But we have had a lot of calls from fans and supporters who
wanted to know when we were going to have Midnight Madness," Land said. "We
decided to do the Blue and Gold game because of the level of interest our
fans have shown about the start of the basketball season."
Free door prizes and refreshments will be provided during the event, which
is free and open to the public. Land said.

Albany State to Induct Second Class into Sports Hall of Fame

Albany State University will induct six persons into its Sports Hall of
Fame at ceremonies on Friday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. at the Merry Acres
Restaurant in Albany, Ga. The second class of inductees into ASU's Sports
Hall of Fame includes two athletes, two supporters and two coaches.
The six inductees are former basketball player Samuel Battle, former
assistant football coach Charles K. Dunson, former basketball player
Charlene McWhorter-Jackson, former basketball coach Robert Rainey
(posthumous) and supporters Ronald D. Wood and W. Gerald Wright.
Battle, a 1958 graduate of Albany State, was one of the most prolific
basketball players in Rams basketball history. A four-year starter who
played for the legendary Obie O'Neal from 1954 to 1957, Battle holds the
distinct honor of being the first athlete to receive a basketball
scholarship at Albany State. He was named to All-SEAC (Southeastern
Athletic Conference) teams during each of his playing years, earning second
team status during his freshman year and first team status in his
sophomore, junior and senior years as a Golden Rams hoopster. Battle led
the Rams in scoring for four consecutive years, led the conference in
scoring for three years and earned conference MVP honors for three
consecutive years.
After his stellar career with the Rams, Battle became an advocate for
displaced citizens and worked with the U.S. Housing and Urban Development
for 35 years. He was one of the first government-employed African Americans
in Southeast Georgia. Battle currently serves as an urban replacement
specialist/consultant with the Atlanta Developmental Authority.
Dr. Dunson, a Lexington, Ky. native, served as an assistant coach and
defensive coordinator with the Golden Rams football team from 1954 to 1969.
In addition to his coaching duties, he was a mathematics instructor. Albany
State won its first conference championship during his second year as an
assistant coach, signaling the beginning of a series of accomplishments for
the Golden Rams. The team won six conference championships in eight years
between 1955 and 1962, and went undefeated and unscored upon during the
1960 championship season.
An avid promoter of professionalism, Dr. Dunson launched a fund-raising
effort to establish an official dress code for the football team. As a
result, the team was able to purchase blazers for 19 returning lettermen
and three coaches. The professional attire drew much attention and
adulation from Albany State fans and opponents.
Dunson's accomplishments went well beyond the playing fields. During his
tenure, he served as chair of the Department of Mathematics, dean of the
School of Education, coordinator of the Three Years Master's Honor Program
and coordinator of the Division of Graduate Studies. He also served as
president of the Albany Football and Basketball Officials Association.
A native Albanian, WcWhorter-Jackson, is one of the most decorated
athletes in school history - male or female. The 1980 Albany State graduate
was a standout basketball player for the Lady Rams from 1975 to 1979. She
currently serves as head basketball coach of the Dougherty Comprehensive
High School Lady Trojans. As a player for the Lady Rams, she was
consistently recognized as one of the best players in the conference and
nation. In 1977 and 1978, she was named an All-American. In 1979, she was
Albany State's Athlete of the Year and earned all-SIAC (Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) honors in 1976, 1977 and 1987. She was
selected as the Black College Player of the Week on numerous occasions
during her collegiate career and received several team awards as well.
McWhorter-Jackson's athletic career did not end with collegiate sports. She
played professional basketball both nationally and internationally from
1979 to 1983. She was drafted by Washington, one of the eight teams that
formed the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL), the first women's
professional basketball league and predecessor to today's WNBA (Women's
National Basketball Association). She was the league's East/West All-Star
Game's Most Valuable Player in 1980, and also made the 1980 All-Star Rookie
Team. During her professional career, she averaged 17 points and eight
rebounds, while playing an average of 21 minutes per game. After the WBL
folded, she ended her professional career in 1983.
She has also enjoyed a successful coaching career at the high school and
collegiate levels. She was named Coach of the Year in 1990, 1991 and 1993,
and won four Region Championships during her coaching career. In 1994, she
served as an assistant coach in the Midwestern Collegiate Athletic
Conference, where her team was conference champions in 1994 and made an
NCAA Tournament appearance in 1995.
Wood, a 1970 graduate of Albany state, has been a top supporter of his alma
mater for more than 20 years. A former collegiate football player, he has
given the majority of his financial support to the football program. He
provided the entire team with practice jerseys in 1988 and has provided
scholarships for several student athletes over the past 28 years.
Wood's support earned him the prestigious Friend of the College Award in
1989, an award that is given to the institution's greatest supporter of the
year. He was instrumental in organizing the Albany State University
Athletic Association and served as its organizing president. He recently
received the 2000 Rammy Award and the 2000 Rammy Lifetime Achievement Award
for his outstanding support of the Youth Motivation Task Force. He has

Alumni Association. He is a member of the Atlanta Chapter of 100 Black Men
of America and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He currently serves as
president of R.D. Wood Insurance Associates, Inc. in Atlanta, Ga.
Wright, is recognized as one of the leading supporters of Albany State
athletics and academics. A 1972 graduate of Albany State, Wright is
president/owner of Star Athletics, Inc., a successful specialty advertising
company in Atlanta, Ga. The Dixie, Ga., native has been a member of the ASU
Foundation Board of Directors since 1994, serving as its president form
1997 to 1999. Under his leadership, the Foundation launched its first-ever
capital campaign in 1994, and raised $1.5 million in pledges.

Chapter's Hall of Fame and the ASU Alumni Hall of Fame.
The late basketball coaching legend Robert Rainey was named Coach of the
Year during the 1964-1965 season for his outstanding accomplishments and
his Rams won the SEAC championship. He is noted for recruiting the talented
Jones Brothers (Oliver, Melvin, Caldwell, Major and Charles) from McGee
Arkansas. He also recruited other Albany State basketball standouts Jimmy

Sponsored by the ASU Athletics Department, the track meet will feature Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and non-conference teams, including Fort Valley State University, Kentucky State University, Morehouse College, Paine College, Georgia Southern University, Tuskegee University and Edward Waters College.
The annual track meet held in honor of Alice Coachman-Davis, the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Coachman-Davis made history and gained international attention by capturing the high jump title with record-setting jump of 5' 6 1/8" during the 1948 Olympic Games in London.
While the 1948 games catapulted her to international acclaim and the first endorsement among African-American women, she had proven herself as a major track and field force in prior years. She won 10 consecutive U.S. titles in the high jump and national titles at 50-meters, 100-meters and as a member in the 400-meter relay on the Tuskegee championship team. Many believe she would have dominated the 1940 and 1944 Summer Games, which were cancelled because of World War II.
The Albany, Ga., native attended Tuskegee University, but earned her bachelor's degree from Albany State (College) after returning from the 1948 games. As a collegian, she was a member of three Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championship basketball teams. She dominated Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) competitions in the high jump. From 1938 to 1948, she won 10 consecutive AAU high jump titles, a record which still holds today.
In 1994, she established the Alice Coachman Track and Field Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists both young athletes and retired Olympians.

Oliver Jones Resigns At Albany State
Albany, GA(OTW)-
After 28 years of coaching service to Albany State University (ASU), head men's basketball coach Oliver Jones has resigned from his position, effective March 22, Athletics Director Dan Land announced today. In a letter to Land, Jones stated he wanted to pursue other interests.
"We are sad to learn of Coach Jones' resignation. He has had a successful career at Albany State and we wish him the best in his future endeavors," Land said.
Jones joined the ASU Athletics staff in 1970, as an assistant coach under Coach Robert Rainey, and assumed the head coaching position after Rainey's death in 1972. Jones has lead the Golden Rams with a 395-348 career record. During his first season (1972-1973), Jones and the Golden Rams won the team's first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championship. Under his leadership, the Golden Rams won six SIAC championships in 1973, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1992 and 1997, and three second-place titles in 1982, 1988 and 1990. Jones and the Golden Rams made seven appearances in the National Collegiate Athletics Association playoffs in 1973, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1992, 1997 and 1998.
Anthony Webb, 31, who has served as an assistant coach under Jones since 1991, has been named interim head coach. A graduate of Albany State, Webb earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Management in 1992, and is currently pursing certification in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. The Sparta, Ga., native is a member of the National Basketball Coaches Association and the ASU National Alumni Association.
Webb, who played as a guard under Jones from 1987-1991, said he accepts the challenge of taking the leadership of the men's basketball program.
"Although I am very sad that Coach Jones has resigned, I am very excited about this opportunity to coach at my alma mater. Coach Jones has left a coaching legacy and can never be replaced. I will pick up where he left off and continue building the championship program he has left. He has brought ASU to national prominence and I hope to continue the tradition."
Albany State will launch a search to fill the head coaching position, Land said.
