"I've seen so many young men that needed help to come through school in Memphis."How do athletes of today differ from the athletes of yesterday?
"A kid may come down, and all he is interested in is making a three-point shot. A two-pointer or drawing a foul would be just as effective."However, this does not stop Johnson from exploring and adapting to various aspects of the game, including the three-point shot.
"I like the variety of styles. It's more than one way to play. There is a slow tempo and there is an up-tempo. I'm finding today most kids like the up-tempo game. We're going to run with it."Johnson, a graduate of Fayetteville State University, and a member of the Fayetteville State Hall-of-Fame, is one to look for positves. He does not bemoan the fact that his school does not get the athletes it used to get.
"Years ago we (Black colleges) got the top athletes, we had so many. But more kids (today) are getting an opportunity. You get to help youngsters who need help."What makes LeMoyne Owen even more remarkable is their travel schedule. Located in Memphis, Tn., they are on the far reaches of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). They travel as far as Savannah, Ga. to play conference games. Bus is the standard mode of transportation.
