Atlanta, GA(OTW)-The final score was 24-3, Hampton Pirates, and the game was not that close. The Pirates used a swarming defense, intercepting Southern quarterback Terrance Levy, five times, as they waltzed to victory in Heritage Bowl Number Nine. Game stats:
Rushing yards: Hampton 260, Southern 122
Total offensive yards: Hampton 384, Southern 186
Total Possession time: Hampton 43:13, Southern 16:47
Third down conversions: Hampton 10 of 21, Southern 0 of 8
Total domination: Hampton
This was a game when stats did not lie.
A good indication of the game flow came on the opening kickoff. Hampton's Chris Parker took a Justin Mattingly boot and returned it 52 yards to the Southern 35. Behind the running and pass receiving of Michael Jones, Hampton marched to the Southern one. But, thanks to a botched Hampton snap on a fourth-and-goal at the SU one, the Jags would recover a Roy Johnson fumble and escape.
On their fourth possession of the game, Hampton would drive 61 yards in 11 plays. Johnson would connect with Zuriel Smith for 27 yards in pass plays in the drive. Pirate runningback Montrell Coley would hit tight end Adrian Wideman on an 11-yard TD to end the march, making the score 7-0 with the extra point.
Late in the second half, Pirate Vincent Lewis intercepted a Levy pass and returned to the SU 47-yard line. This would lead to a 22-yard Acie Wyatt field goal, and a 10-0 Hampton lead.
Late in the first half Southern got a break when a Hampton punt went bad on a errant snap. SU's Kentrell Blatcher recovered the ball, and the Jags were in Pirate territory for the first time in the first half. Mattingly would kick kick a 33-yard field goal with 11 seconds in the first half, and Southern would trail 10-3 at the intermission. It would be Southern's only score.
The Southern offense did not get the ball past midfield one time in the first half. They only got the ball in Hampton territory twice in the second half.
The first time was on the opening kickoff in the third quarter. SU got the ball on their 32 and drove down to the Hampton 10, with Ryan Lewis rushing for 43 yards in the march. However Levy was picked off by Corey Cason at the 10-yard line.
Hampton got the ball and promptly drove 92 yards in 19 plays. Johnson accounted for 47 yards on the drive, flicking a seven-yard TD to Wideman, sealing the Pirate win.
Johnson was 17 of 28 passing for 171 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked twice. Coley rushed for 71 yards in the game.
Levy was six of 24 for 86 yards with five interceptions.
"The motivation was there," said Levy. "When our offense doesn't score, that tends to get a team up. Tonight we gave it our hardest, but that wasn't enough."
It sure wasn't, because Hertitage Bowl Number Nine was a Pirate party.

Vincent Lewis not only had three interceptions, but he led Hampton in tackles with seven (four solo.)
Southern's Channing Warner had 20 tackles (six unassited).

Troy, AL(OTW)-Demetruis Bendross caught touchdowns receptions of 77 yards (first quarter from JaJaun Seider) and a 57-yarder (third quarter from Quinn Gray), as Florida A&M (10-3) beat Troy State 17-10, and stepped into the NCAA 1-AA semifinals. They will play at Youngstown State next Saturday. Bendross had 164 yards in receptions.
FAMU's defense had four sacks in the game. It held Troy State to 190 yards in total offense.
Youngstown, OH(OTW)-Jeff Ryan threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns as Youngstown State steamrolled North Carolina A&T 41-3 Saturday. The loss ended the Aggies (11-2) season.
Adrian Brown rushed for two touchdowns for the winners, who advance to host Florida A&M in the 1-AA semi-finals next week.
The winners had 459 yards in total offense, rolling upa 24-3 halftime lead.
A&T had 197 yards in total offense on the day.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Larry Tucker and Khari McKie suspended since Thursday for violating team rules, will remain suspended from the Coppin State basketball team.
Joe Brown has been cleared to play after suffering an eye injury three game ago.

Fairfax, VA(OTW)-Erik Herring scored 17 points as George Mason kept Coppin State winless, defeating the Eagles 69-66 Saturday.
George Cajigas continued his fine offensive play for CSC scoring 25 points (9-17 FGs, 5-5 FTs).

Nashville, TN(OTW)-North Carolina A&T controlled the ball for nearly 42 minutes in the contest, as they beat top-ranked Tennessee State 24-10 in opening round NCAA 1-AA action Saturday. The Aggies rushed for 206 yards as a team on the day. Miguel Smith rushed for 80 yards for the winners.
Marcus Bryson caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jason Battle early in the third quarter to snap a 10-10 tie and give A&T the lead for good.
TSU's only touchdown came on a 97-yard kickoff return for a TD by Avion Black in the second quarter. The Tigers were limited to 168 yards of total offense (117 passing, 51 rushing) in the game. A&T (11-1) now moves on to second round action against Youngstown State.
Boone, NC(OTW)-Florida A&M (9-3) jumped out to a 19-0 second quarter lead, and held off a late Appalachain State rally, winning 44-29, and advancing to second-round action of the NCAA 1-AA playoffs Saturday. JaJuan Seider threw first-half touchdown passes to Cainon Lamb (16, 25 yards), and ran for a seven-yard score, helping FAMU to the early 19-point lead. Seider also ran for a 15-yard score in the final period, to help put the game away
Seider threw for 313 yards in the game. He accounted for 394 of FAMU's 479 yards of total offense in the game.
Daniel Wilcox had a 65-yard TD run, and caught a four-yard touchdown pass for the losers.
FAMU advances to play Troy State in second round action.

Hampton, VA(OTW)-Hampton scored 21 third quarter points, as they defeated Morgan State 34-14. The Pirates now wait the results of the NCAA Division 1-AA playoff selections Sunday. If the NCAA takes Florida A&M along with North Carolina A&T, it will almost certainly mean that the Pirates will be Heritage Bowl bound.
Montrell Coley rushed for 168 yards and two touchdwons as the Pirates gained 309 yards on the ground in the game.
Dover,DE(OTW)-Delaware State took a play out of the Howard playbook, as they beat the Bison 42-25 Saturday. Howard led 17-7 at the half, but the Hornets scored 35 second half points (21 in the third quarter). Rashaan Matthews threw for three touchdowns in the game, two to Tommy Mims (31,5 yards) in the third period. Howard quarterback Bobby Townsend was 12 of 44 for a TD in the game.
Orlando, FL(OTW)-JuJuan Seider passed for two touchdowns to Cainon Lamb (12,2 yards), and Kenneth Williams rushed for two TDs, helping Florida A&M build a 35-0 halftime lead, and an eventual 63-14 win over Bethune-Cookman Saturday.
Williams rushed for 81 yards, and Seider passed for 203 yards and ran for another TD.
Bethune-Cookman quarterback Patell Troutman rushed for 153 yards and one touchdown in the game.
In other action, North Carolina A&T polished off South Carolina State 27-7 to win the MEAC outright.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Brian Barber and Shaun Holtz scored 16 points each as Towson State beat Coppin State 61-57 Saturday night.
For the second night in a row Jorge Cajigas led the Eagles in scoring. Saturday he had 12 points.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Tim Hyland scored 15 points as Maryland-Baltimore County beat Coppin State 72-58 in the 1999 Toyota Battle of Baltimore.
Jorge Cajigas scored 28 points for the Eagles.
It was the first regualr season game for both schools.

Greensboro, NC(OTW)-North Carolina A&T (9-1, 7-0) reeled off 30 straight points to defeat Florida A&M 30-15 Saturday. The game all but clinched an MEAC title for the Aggies.
It was an unusual type of A&T game in that the Aggies did most of their damage through the air instead of on the ground.
Eric Farmer threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Jason Battle in the first quarter, and Tim Funderburke connected with Darius Helton on a 57-yard TD strike in the second period. A&T had 219 yards through the air in the game, with 184 on the ground. Maurice Smith rushed for 118 yards and a TD for the winners.
FAMU scored first on a nine-yard scoring pass from JaJuan Seider to Demetrius Bendross in the first quarter.
The Rattlers had 318 yards through the air in the game, but only 54 on the ground.
Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Bobby Townsend threw for 522 yards and four touchdowns to lead Howard to a 42-38 shootout win over Morgan State Saturday. Townsend threw a six-yard TD to Jerome Philpot with 10 seconds left in the game to give the Bison the win. Howard, which trailed 31-14 in the third quarter, scored 28 points in the final frame.
Morgan State's Ali Culpepper scored four touchdowns in the game.
Norfolk, VA(OTW)-Patell Troutman had 200 yards in total offense as Bethune-Cookman outlasted Norfolk State 26-6 in a sloppy game Saturday.
NSU fumbled four times with three interceptions on the day. BCC fumbled four times in the game.
Troutman had 80 yards on the ground and 123 yards in the air. Teammate Jeremy Thomas rushed for two TDs in the game.
Orangeburg, SC(OTW)-Derek O'Neal and Chad Eaddy combined for 357 yards rushing and three touchdwons, as South Carolina State beat Delaware State 34-15 Saturday. O'Neal ran for 252 yards and a TD, and Eaddy had 105 yards and two TDs for the Bulldogs.
SCSU scored 17 second quarter points to take command of the game.

Tallahassee, FL(OTW)-JuJuan Seider threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as Florida A&M (7-2) crushed Southern (8-1) 65-18 Saturday. FAMU scored 35 first quarter points and led 42-12 at the half.
Seider threw for 295 yards and rushed for 117 in the game. Teammate Kevin Williams rushed for 105 yards and two TDs in the battle.
SU quarterback Troy Williams threw for a TD for the losers.
Greensboro, NC(OTW)-Adrian Parker and Eric Farmer combined for 170 yards rushing as North Carolina A&T whipped Delaware State 24-13 Saturday. The Aggies are 8-1 overall and 6-0 in league play, and will host Florida A&M next Saturday.
Farmer had 95 yards rushing for the winners.
Hornet quarterback Rashawn Matthews threw for 251 yards and a touchdown .
Washington, DC(OTW)-Howard (4-5) scored 28 third quarter points on their way to a 49-42 shootout win over South Carolina State (3-5) Saturday.
Bison Jonathan Brewer scored two touchdowns in the third quarter explosion, including a 98-yard TD kickoff return.
However, it was Bobby Townsend's three-yard TD pass to Elijah Thurmond with 39 seconds left in the game, that snapped a 42-42 tie, and earned Howard the win.
Townsend threw for 282 yards and two TDs in the contest.
Bulldogs' Chad Eaddy and Derek O'Neal combined for 324 yards and five touchdowns in the game. Eaddy had four TDs and O'Neal had one.
In other MEAC action, Norfolk State edged Morgan State 20-16.
Daytona Beach, FL(OTW)-Patell Troutman ran for two touchdowns, including the one-yard game winner in overtime, as Bethune-Cookman bushwacked Hampton 34-27 Saturday. Troutman, who rushed for 182 yards in the contest, threw tfor two TDs. 5 Nov
According to published reports, Hampton will have two transfers eligible to play for their men's basketball team this year. They are 6-6 Lasean Howard, coming from Long Beach State, and 6-9 Mohamed Woni, coming over from Clemson.
Daytona Beach, FL(OTW)-Darren Dawkins kicked a 25-yard field goal late in the game, and Maurice Smith ran for 143 yards and a touchdown, leading North Carolina A&T to a 19-18 win over Bethune-Cookman.
The Aggies are 7-1 overall and 5-0 in MEAC action.
Dwakins had 37-yard field goal in the first quarter, and Smith had a 37-yard TD run in the same stanza, giving the Aggies a 10-0 early lead.
Tallahassee, FL(OTW)-JaJuan Seider accounted for 390 yards in total offense as Florida A&M (6-2, 6-0) blasted Delaware State 48-19 Saturday. Seider rushed for 161 yards and threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He also ran for two TDs.
FAMU led 28-6 at the half.
Hornet Albert Horsey had TD receptions of 24 and 13 yards.
DSU is 3-5 overall, but 3-2 in league action, and is still mathematically alive for a Hertiage Bowl birth.
Hampton, VA(OTW)-Hampton scored the game's first 19 points, and held on to beat South Carolina State 37-29 Saturday.
The Pirates (6-3, 4-2) got two touchdown passes from Roy Johnson. Teammate Derric McIlwain rushed for 113 yards and TD runs of eight and two yards in the game.
Bulldog Derek O'Neal rushed for three TDs, despite on running for 30 total yards.
The Pirates remain in the hunt for post-season competition with the win.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-North Carolina A&T ran for 241 yards as a team on their way to a 30-6 whipping of Morgan State Saturday.
Aggie Maurice Smith rushed for 104 yards while teammate Eric Farmer ran for tow TDs.
Norfolk, VA(OTW)-Norfolk State quarterback Maurice Selby's two-point pass attempt was foiled late in the fourth period, as Hampton held on to beat NSU 28-27. Selby scored on a five-yard run but the two-point try failed.
Hampton (5-2, 2-1) scored the first 21 points of the game, but had to hold on. The Pirates rushed for 282 yards in the game, including a 14-yard TD jaunt by quarterback Roy Johnson.
Selby threw for 204 yards and two TDs for the Spartans (1-5, 0-5).
Washington, DC(OTW)-Towson State beat Howard 49-33 in a game that featured 1,160 yards of total offense. It was a game in which three touchdowns were scored every quarter. It was a game that averaged 7.2 yards per offensive play.
The Bison jumped out to a 27-14 lead at the half as Jermaine Hutchinson scored three first half touchdowns. He would rush for 166 yards and four touchdowns in the game.
In another MEAC contest Tauric Rice caught a 25-yard TD pass late in the game, lifting Howard to a 29-23 win over Norfolk State Saturday.
However, a 21-point third quarter gaved Towson State the lead for good. Tiger quarterback Joe Lee would throw for 431 yards and four touchdowns in the game. Lee leads Division-1-AA in passing.
Howard quarterback Roy Anderson threw for 315 yards and a TD. Bison wideout Elijah Thurmon had six receptions for 135 yards in the non-league game.
Elsewhere, South Carolina State and Bethune-Cookman were postponed due to Hurricane Irene.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Midnight Madness, Coppin State style, will be held Friday night at 9 p.m. at the Coppin Center. The women and men's teams will have scrimmages starting at midnight. Door prizes and a live deejay for entertainment are only a few activities planned for the evening.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Coppin State's men's basketball schedule has been released, and the early part of it it brutal.
Between November 23 and Jan 10, the Eagles will play 12 of 13 games on the road. This stretch will find CSC visiting teams such as Connecticut, St. John's, Purdue, and Auburn.

Washington, DC(OTW)-Quinn Gray threw a 25-yard TD pass to Demitriss Bendross in the third overtime, giving Florida A&M a 40-34 win Saturday. The game provided nearly 800 yards in total offense combined.
Kevin Williams rushed for 116 yards for FAMU (4-2, 4-0).
Jermaine Hutchinson rushed for 78 yards for Howard.
FAMU fumbled the ball six times and lost three, Howard lost all three of their fumbles in the contest.
Greensboro, NC(OTW)-North Carolina A&T used a potent ground game to chew up Hampton 41-24 Saturday. The Aggies rushed for 251 yards on the ground and only threw the ball seven times in the whole game.
They led 41-6 going into the fourth quarter.
Maurice Smith rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown for the winners (4-1, 2-0), who are now in the MEAC driver seat with Florida A&M.
Hampton's Roy Johnson threw for 235 yards and a touchdown in the contest. The Pirates are 4-2 overall and 4-1 in MEAC action.
Norfolk, VA(OTW)-Craig James threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Monte Stokes late in the fourth quarter, as South Carolina State beat Norfolk State 27-23 Saturday.
Derek O'Neal rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns for the winners.
Daytona Beach, FL(OTW-Second-half touchdowns by Jay Rogers and Antwon Robinson led Bethune-Cookman to a 26-6 win over Johnson C. Smith Saturday.
Rogers had a two-yard TD run in the third period, and Robinson a 50-yard interception TD run in the fourth period, to lead the way for BCC.
The Golden Bulls got there only TD on a 19-yard run by Jimmie Bell in the second quarter.
Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Morgan State scored 22 third quarter points to beat Towson State 28-22 Saturday. Two of the TDs in the period were toucdown passes from Willie McGirt to Armand Walters (49,61 yards).

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Coppin State sophomore roundballer Rasheem Sims will not be able to practice with the team until early November. Sims, who plays guard, re-injured a foot, when he bent a previously inserted screw in the foot during a pickup game.

Tallahasse, FL(OTW)-JaJuan Seider threw for five first have touchdowns as Florida A&M swamped Morgan State 66-10 Saturday. FAMU put 56 first half points on the board.
Cainon lamb had three TD receptions for the Rattles, who played their subs for more than half the game.
Seider threw for 276 yards in the contest.
Norfolk, VA(OTW)-North Carolina A&T scored three fourth quarter touchdowns to avoid upset minded Norfolk State 28-14 Saturday.
A Maurice Smith 75-yard TD jaunt, and a Jason Battle 25-yard TD reception doomed the Spartans (both in the fourth quarter). Both scores came in the final period.
Daytona Beach, FL(OTW)-Aaron Quinn kicked field goals of 40, 37, and 26 yards, and Raswan Matthews threw for a touchdown, as Delaware State suprised Bethune-Cookman 43-29 Saturday. DSU scored the first 27 points of the ballgame and coasted to the win.
Jay Rogers rushed for 88 yards and two scored for BCC. Rogers's scored were from 12 and 55 yards out.
In other action involving an MEAC team, South Carolina State lost to The Citadel 20-14.

Jacksonville, FL(OTW)-Florida A&M piled up 21 points in the second, third, and fourth quarters on the way to a 76-17 massacre of South Carolina State Saturday. Rattler Kevin Williams ran for 74 yards and three touchdowns in the game. FAMU had 574 yards in total offense in the contest. Jacquay Nunnally had 108 yards in receptions for the winners.
Derek O'Neal and Chad Eaddy rushed for State's only two touchdowns. Daytona Beach, FL(OTW)-Patell Troutman rushed for 113 yards, threw a touchdown, and ran for another as Bethune-Cookman whipped Morris Brown 28-16 Saturday. BCC had 289 yards rushing in the contest, while limiting MoBrown to 75 yards on the ground.
Wolverine star runningback Bobby Wilson was held to nine yards on five carries.
Washington, DC(OTW)-Howard used two fumble recoveries for touchdowmns to erase Texas Southern 32-20 Saturday. Obie Arah ran a loose ball back 18 yards for a TD in the second quarter, and Vontrae Long ran a fumble back 34 yards in the third period for the Bison.
Texas Southern big play man Joey Jamison had an 81-yard punt return and an 84-yard pass reception for a TD in the contest.
In non-league games involving MEAC schools, North Carolina A&T lost to Elon 40-7, and Bucknell beat Delaware State 38-28, despite 336 yards passing by losing quarterback Rashawn Matthews.

Washington, DC(OTW)-Howard (1-2) will play host to Texas Southern (2-1) this Saturday in Washington, D.C. in a SWAC-MEAC clash. Last year Texas Southern beat Howard 30-7 in Houston. Howard features explosive wide receiver Elijah Thurmond who has 25 catches for 420 yards and two touchdowns. Offensive linemen Mpumi Masimini and Levar Young are All-American candidates for the Bison.
TSU has two tough runningbacks in Waymond Steed and Ray Rubins. Steed is (44 carries, 233 yards, 3 TDs) is averaging over five yards per carry. Rubins (20 carries, 155 yards, 1 TD) is averaging over seven yards per rush.
Game time is set for 1 p.m. eastern at Greene Stadium on Howard's campus.

Dover, DE(OTW)-Rashaan Matthews,/B> threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns as Delaware State beat norfolk State 26-6 Saturday. The win snapped a 19-game Hornet losing streak dating back to October of 1997.
Maurice Foster rushed for 82 yards and a TD for the winners.
Cincinnati, OH(OTW)-Bobby Townsend threw three fourth quarter touchdowns, leading Howard to a 31-27 come-from-behind win over Bethune-Cookman Saturday/
Howard trailed 27-10 in the fourth quarter.
Towsend put the Bison ahead to stay with less than a minute in the game, when he threw a 35-yard TD strike to Eli Thurmond, who had 202 yards in receptions in the game.
BCC's Patell Troutman rushed for 131 yards and a TD in a losing effort.
Elsewhere, Tennessee State beat Florida A&M 42-25 in Atlanta, and the South Carolina State-Morgan State game was cancelled due to Hurricane Floyd.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Greg Hammond, a transfer from Boston University, has quit the Coppin State Men's basketball team. Hammond is a senior.
At the same time CSC added two new men's hoopsters, Michael Poster and Pierre Denervaud.
Poster, 6-4, is a two-sport athlete from the North Dakota State College of Science, a two-year school. He played football and basketball there, averaging 10 points and seven rebounds per game on the court.
Denervaud, a 6-2 guard, is a former member of the Swiss under-21 national team. He played for the 1997-98 national championship team, averaging five points a game off the bench.
He is currently attending CSC on an honors scholarship.

Washington, DC(OTW)-Howard's Jermaine Hutchinson scored on a two-yard run late in the fourth quarter, only to have a game-tying extra point attempt blocked, giving Hampton a 28-27 win over the Bison.
Hutchinson had 152 yards and four TD runs in a losing effort.
Hampton's Montrell coley scored on a five-yard run in the fourth quarter, snapping a 21-21 tie.
Mike Jones had 92 yards rushing for Hampton.
Orangeburg, SC(OTW)-Chad Eady and Jermaine O'Neal rushed for two touchdowns each as South Carolina State edged Benedict 26-23 Saturday.
O'Neal ran for 187 yards in the game.
Benedict quarterback Royston Williams threw for a TD and ran for another in a losing cause.
Daytona Beach, FL(OTW)-Jay Rogers ran for two first half touchdowns, and Pa'Tell Troutman had another first quarter run, as Bethune-Cookman held off Morgan State 28-25 Saturday.
Morgan State Willie McGirt threw for four touchdown passes, two to Anthony Collins (51, 17 yards) in a losing effort.
Dover, DE(OTW)-Steven Ferguson rushed for 192 yards as Elon scored early and often, and held off Delaware State 51-28 Saturday. The winners piled up 504 yards on the ground.
Delaware State's Rashawn Matthews threw three TD passes, two to Albert Horsey (58, 50 yards) in the game.
Delaware State has not won a game since 1997.
In other games Norfolk State lost to Florida A&M 56-7 and North Carolina A&T beat Winston-Salem State 20-7 on Saturday.

Eric Farmer scored on runs of one and 17 yards, and Darren Dawkins had field goals of 25 and 21 yards, as North Carolina A&T beat North Carolina Central in the Aggie-Eagle Classic.

Miami, FL(OTW)-Kenny Kelly threw a touchdwon pass to Sanatana Moss, keying a 40-point first half outburst, as Florida A&M was no match for for eighth-ranked Miami, losing 57-3.
Hampton, VA(OTW)-Montrell Coley rushed for 154 yards and one touchdown as Hampton blanked hapless Delaware State 21-0. Pirate Mike Jones had TD runs of three and 17 yards.
Orangeburg, SC(OTW)-Derek O'Neal rushed for 141 yards and one touchdown as South Carolina State edged Charelston southern 20-14 Saturday. The Bulldogs raced out to a 20-7 halftime lead.
Charleston southern had 119 yards in penalties in the game.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Stephanie Ready has been named as an assistant men's basketball coach at Coppin State. According to the NCAA, Ready becomes only the second woman to serve on the bench of a Division One Men's staff. Bernadette Maddox, an assistant at Kentucky (and now the head women's basketball coach there) was the first to do it froom 1990-95 under Rick Pitino. Ready is 23-years-old.
Over a year ago Coppin State had come under scrutiny for Title IX violations.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Carl Hicks is the head track/cross country coach at Coppin State. Hicks, 29, joined the track staff as a volunteer in 1993, becoming a full-time assistant in 1995. Hicks is a 1993 graduate of Maryland-Eastern Shore. He replaces Ernest Barrett, who accepted the head track position at Maryland-Eastern Shore.
In another non-conference game, Bethune-Cookman beat Savannah State 17-14.

Harold Featherstone, a right-handed pitcher from North Carolina A&T, was picked by the San Francisco Giants in the 1999 Amateur baseball draft. Featherstone was the 468th overall pick in the draft, and was chosen in the 15th round.
Howard's Aaron Warren was the taken in the 20th round (610th pick) by the Colorado Rockies. Warren is a shorstop.

CORAL GABLES, FL - Junior left fielder Anthony Doudt went four-for-five with two home runs and a season-high five runs-batted-in to lead second-seeded Florida Atlantic (53-8) to a 12-0 win over fourth-seeded Bethune-Cookman (27-31) Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Regional in Coral Gables.
After a 1:19 rain delay, Bethune-Cookman took the loss and is eliminated from the 1999 NCAA Baseball championships.
Florida Atlantic, which recorded the first post season win in school history, scored in each of the first four innings including five runs in the top of the first. The Owls went on to recorded 10 or more runs for the 25th time this season. FAU starter Dan Jackson (10-2) pitched five innings allowing one hit while striking out seven in picking up his 10th win of the season. Junior Robert Santom relieved Jackson at the start of the sixth and pitched the final four innings striking out eight en route to his second save of the year. The shut out is the seventh of the season for the Owls pitching staff who also recorded their third two-hitter of the year. Bethune-Cookman starter Elgin Graham lasted just two thirds of an inning allowing five runs on five hits.

Esquivel's Three HRs Pace Miami Past Bethune-Cookman

CORAL GABLES, FL - Junior third-baseman Lale Esquivel broke out of season ending slump with a three home run, seven RBI performance to lead top-seeded Miami (42-13) to a 15-9 win over Bethune-Cookman (27-30) in the opening round of the NCAA Baseball Regional in Coral Gables.
Esquivel, who was 5-for-26 over the final nine games of the season, recorded his first multiple home run game of the season and the first three home run game of his career. He is the fourth player in Miami history to hit three home runs in a game and the first to do so in post season competition. Esquivel also set UM post season records with 12 total bases and seven runs batted in.
Miami, which improves to 9-0 all-time against Bethune-Cookman, recorded 10 or more runs in a game for the 37th time in post season play.
Sophomore right hander Tom Farmer (2-1) pitched 4.2 innings of relief in picking up the win for Miami. Bethune-Cookman starter Mike Shirtcliffe (7-5) took the loss giving up 11 runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
The Wildcats were led offensively by right fielder Jeante Nunez who went 2-for-4, including a three-run home run in the top of the first, with four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Miami will face third-seeded Florida International, which defeated second-seeded Florida Atlantic 4-1 in the Regional opener, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Bethune-Cookman will face Florida Atlantic in an elimination game at noon.
Bethune-Cookman will draw the University of Miami (FL) on Friday, May 28, 7 p.m. local time in NCAA Baseball Tournament play . Miami is the number one seed in the whole tournament. The weekend action will take place at the University of Miami. More later....

Fresno, Calif. - South Carolina bounced back from its upset yesterday and defeated Florida A & M 2-0, eliminating the Rattlerettes from NCAA Regional play.
South Carolina scored the only run it needed in the first inning and then added an insurance run in the fifth. Pitcher Megan Matthews gave up only two hits to Florida A & M, one a double to Kim Browning. South Carolina's Adrienne Genovese went 2-3 from the plate and drove in one run with Kim Pietro bringing in the other.

Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State's Kristen Hunter pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Bulldogs defeated Florida A & M 5-0 in the final game of the first day of competition at the NCAA regional championships. Fresno State, the top seed at this regional, was the only higher seed to survive the day. The win was a special one for the Bulldogs and Margie Wright as Fresno State recorded its 1,000th program victory.
The Bulldogs pounded out nine hits with both Amanda Scott and Angela Cervantez going 2-4 with Cervantez knocking in three runs. The big inning for the Bulldogs was the third after they left two n base in the second. Becky Witt led off with a single to left and was advanced when Vanessa Czarnecki walked. Scott singled to left and Witt scored on the hit and error by the leftfielder. Czarnecki moved to third on the error and scored along with Scott when Cervantez tripled down the left field line.

Jose Laureano, one of Florida A&M's starting quarterbacks during the 1998 football season, has lost an appeal before the NCAA to gain an extra year of eligibility. Laureano, who was dismissed from North Carolina State's football team in November of 1996 after being charged with assaulting two students, was trying to regain the year he lost (1997), while trying to clear up the charges.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)- Coppin State's Marty Kusick and Trisha Allen have been named male and female athletes of the year respectively. Kusick, a 125-pound wrestler, was 32-8 overall and 14-0 in dual competition this past season.
Allen, who played on the CSC women's basketball team, led the MEAC in free throw percentage (.761), and was eighth in scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game.

Charleston, SC(OTW)-The inaugural Lowcountry Bulldog Classic, a football game between South Carolina State University and The Citadel, will take place on October 2nd in Charleston, S.C. The schools agreed to a two-year contract with both games being played in The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium. The two teams met one other time, right after Hurricane Hugo in 1989, with Citadel winning 31-20 in that contest.
Columbia, SC(OTW)-Two South Carolina State student-athletes are among some 300 nationally selected to participate in the third annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference set for May 31-June 4 at the Disney sports and resorts complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The athletes are April Wheeler (softball) and Nathan Cochran (football). Wheeler is a biology major and Cochran is a mathematics major. Both are SCSU Presidential Scholars and members of the MEAC All-Academic Team.

Notes: Lettered in football, basketball and track and field in high school. Lettered at Hampton the past three years. Was a backup in 1996 and '97, then moved into the starting lineup in '98 and had 42 tackles, 16 for loss and 12 1/2 sacks.
Positives: Workout warrior. Very strong for his size in terms of weightroom numbers and has excellent straight-line speed. Started to come on as a football player in '98 and really improved. Shows some pass-rush ability. Was able to beat a lot of tackles at the Division I-AA level with quickness. Can get up the field and really rush the passer.
Negatives: Too small for an every-down defensive end and may not have the instincts for linebacker. Still has a long way to go. Has to learn how to come off blocks better and develop his techniques and moves.
Summary: A project who will be considered because he can run so well. Might fit in as a pass-rushing defensive end.

Defense Stops Offense In Garnett and Blue Game

Orangeburg, SC-In the annual South Carolina State Garnett and Blue Spring Game, the Bulldog defense dominated by outscoring the offesne 33-1.
The contest used a special scoring system to award the defense points (two points each for stopping the offense on three downs and out, turnovers, etc.)
Linebackers Justin Danner and Ezekiel Gamble led the charge for the defense. Danner had eight stops, four of them unassisted, while Gamble had five solo tackles and two assists. Defensive back Stephon Kelly returned a fumble 33 yards for a score.
The defense racked up eight points in the first quarter, and added nime more in the second stanza to lead 17-0 at the half.
Senior quarterback Craig James was the only Bulldog quarterback to complete a pass, as he connected on five of seven attempts for 118 yards, with all of the completions going to senior Johnny Loper with the longest being 41 yards.
Stanley Stephens led all rushers with 35 yards on six carries.

Orangeburg, SC(OTW)-South Carolina State and Benedict College will renew a 70-year-old football rivlary in 1999. The two teams will play Sept. 11 at Orangeburg, SC. The opportunity for State and Benedict became available after the Bulldogs granted Furman, the orignally scheduled opponent for Sept 11, a buyout of the contest so the Paladins could play North Carolina. The last time South Carolina State and Benedict played was in 1966. They first started playing in 1926. The Benedict-SCSU agreement is for one season, and includes a financial guarantee for the Tigers.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Coppin State's Marty Kusick has received an at-large invitation to the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Penn State, beginning on March 18. Kusick finished second in the 125 lb. weight class in the NCAA East Regionals on the weekend of 6-7 Mar in Washington D.C. Kusick becomes the fifth CSC wrestler to qualify in the last five years.

He needs to get into better shape, but he's shown he has the potential to be a big presence on each end of the floor. James is a natural shot-blocker, and in scrimmages and preseason games he has shown he can score in the low post and that he is willing to bang his body against anybody. He didn't play organized basketball before attending college. This past fall while playing for the Harlem Globetrotters, James dunked on an 11-foot-4 rim.

Coppin State's men's basketball is in a second-place tie with Morgan State going into Saturday game against South Carolina State. Fred Warrick is fourth in the nation in three-pointers made per game (3.7) for CSC.
Trisha Allen, who plays for the Coppin State women's team has scored 1,005 points in her career. She is now tied for third with Thelma Lyles on the all-time scorer's list at the school.

South Carolina State Football Signs 18 Prospects...
Orangeburg, SC(OTW)-South Carolina State signed (18) high school football prospects to grants-in-aid Wednesday, the national signing day. Ten of the signees are from the Palmetto State, with seven from the Orangeburg surrounding area.
Among he prospects are two quarterbacks, six linemen, five defensive backs, two running backs, a fullback,and two linebackers.
The Bulldogs' Willie Jeffries said S.C. State had prioritized its recruiting based on certain needs, and he felt satisfied most of those priorites, but noted there were a couple of areas the team fell short in.
S.C. State was seeking help at quarterback, fullback, in the defensive secondary and along both lines.
"I feel that we did a good job bringing in those players we needed," Jeffries said. At least we think we did. However, you won't know until they get here and begin making a contribution. But at this point, we believe we did okay in most of our areas of needs, although we will still be looking to satisfy our needs at fullback."
Bulldog recruiting coordinator Ben Blacknall echoed Jeffries' sentiments.
"We certainly wanted to upgrade our talent level at quarterback," said Blacknall. "And with the two young men that we signed, we feel we have done that.
"And we were really hit hard in our secondary as we lost six players, including three starters and two of our top backups," Blacknall continued. "We still have some needs we are looking to fill, especially at fullback. We went after some outstanding prospects at this position, but we didn't get them. But, we hope we still have the opportunity to do so."

Ali Abdullah had 21 points for the Bison.
Daytona Beach, FL(OTW)-James Jones had 20 points as South Carolina State edged Bethune-Cookman 58-56 in overtime.
Freddie Cole had 19 points for BCC.
Tallahassee, FL(OTW)-Monroe Pippins had 16 points as Florida A&M squeaked by North Carolina A&T 65-63.
Marque Carrington had 16 points and six assists for A&T.
Princess Anne, MD(OTW)-Joel Hoover had 22 points and seven assists as Maryland-Eastern Shore beat Hampton 64-61.

Dover, DE(OTW)-Damian Woolfolk scored 29 points as Norfolk State silenced Delaware State 104-90. NSU shot 57 percent from the floor in the game.

Jorge Cajigas, a 5-10 point guard at Coppin State is the MEAC player of the week after averaging 22 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in two wins of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Hampton.

Baltimore, MD(OTW)-Fred Warrick scored 34 points as Coppin State beat Norfolk State 95-82 in overtime. Warrick played the entire 45 minutes of the game. CSC shot 55 percent from the field in the contest.
Damian Woofolk scored 29 points for NSU, which was outscored 18-5 in OT. Spartan Dion Dove sent the game into overtime at 77-77 by sinking a layin with just over a minute left in regulation.
CSC has won six straight games.
Dover, DE(OTW)-Dexter Hall had 15 points and 15 rebounds as South Carolina State defeated Delaware State 75-65.
Stefan Malliet led the Hornets with 21 points.

Greensboro, NC(OTW)-Jonanthan Richmond scored 24 points (15-16 FTS) as North Carolina A&T beat Delaware State 84-79.
Stephan Malliet scored a game high 34 points for the Hornets.
Hampton, VA(OTW)-Jorge Cajigas scored 29 points as Coppin State beat Hampton 70-58. CSC shot an uncanny 90 percent from 3-point range on the night.
